Adding lush landscape to your yard is not only pleasing to the eye but also increases house value substantially.
Your garden will be even more valuable if it attracts birds which make the beautiful atmosphere lively. Creating a bird sanctuary is fun but how do you do it?
A successful bird sanctuary requires different habitats, foliage, water and food sources. You can use a diversity of elements like boxes, woodpiles, vines, and natural cavities to attract different birds.
Plants play an important role too. Try to fill your garden with plants such as milk weed. These plants attract insects, such as protein rich caterpillars, which in turn attract birds.
Also, flowering plants that go to seed at the end of the season provide a natural food source. Tall plants provide ground cover when foraging, which will make them feel safe from predators.
You should choose plants that flower and seed at different times of the year, so that the food source is constant. Don’t forget to put up squirrel proof feeders as well, so that the other critters don’t consume all the bird food!
Once you have bird feeders (seeds, berries, flowers), water for birdbaths, shelter and nesting sites in place, attracting birds to your garden is a breeze.
