Guerilla Gardeners Spruce Up Urban Eyesores

Theresa and Doug are “guerrilla gardeners” – citizen activists who transform urban landscapes by gardening in public spaces without permission. Call it graffiti with Sunflowers and Petunias.

Guerrilla gardeners often choose high-profile locations to make an environmental statement, a sewer hole or an abandoned newspaper box.

But Theresa says her guerrillas prefer to create permanent urban gardens which people – and municipal workers – cannot later destroy.

It is a bit sad that the gardeners have to behave like guerrillas and and risk being caught on the wrong side of the law for planting without permission and even being accused of vandalism.

I think guerrilla gardening can be an interesting form of community service. Dressing up sewer holes or newspaper boxes with beautiful shrubs and flowers makes for a more pleasant environment.

What do you guys think of guerrilla gardening?
